Thinny Thursday Tip 8

By Dessert Darling ·   September 16th, 2010

Hi guys, it's Thinny Thursday, where I share my personal tips and tricks to maintaining a healthy life while still enjoying plenty of desserts 🙂

Tip #8- Enjoy Eating! Never starve Yourself

For me, over thinking food is the kiss of death. As I mentioned in this post here, I grew up during all the food fads. Some had me avoiding fat grams, then calories, then carbs, then sugar, etc. etc.  Food diets play a mind-game on you that consequently make you obsessive to the point of planning out your meals the night before in bed, calculating and counting calories (oh how I do NOT miss those days!!!).

The real trick for me is to not think about it. The trick is to eat Real food, and enjoy. Once you do that, you no longer need to obsess, because then you're actually satisfied.

Now for "Never Starve Yourself"-  When you fast, you're signaling to your body that you are in a famine. Your body then goes into self-preservation mode, which slows down your metabolism. Yikes! Our metabolisms are our friends guys! If this is the case about NOT eating, I have to think the reverse is the same for indulging.  Right?!

FreshproduceYou can never have too many of these goodies!

Ok, I'm not a nutritionist, but when I'm over-eating, I really think that I'm signaling to my body that food abounds, and my metabolism should kick it up a gear for me. Of course, you can't overindulge everyday of your life. That would just make you plain fat. But if you do it a few times a week, and then eat well the rest of the days, I think it makes for a healthy, functioning, well-oiled metabolism that actually works for you!

Again, I repeat, this only works with real food.  My little over-eating trick would surely not pan out if you were indulging in processed, pre-packaged, artificial or fast food items.  And of course, this progam of "eating and enjoying" your food only works in conjunction with a solid workout regimen (like these workouts). Also, don't forget my tip about no sodas!

These are my simplified thoughts on the matter.  Of course, there're many other factors to consider, like genetics and even the bacteria in your gut that can play a role in your weight (see study here). Ultimately, though, these tips work for me, so I hope sharing them somehow helps you! 🙂 xo

Great tips DD! I HAVE tried to starve myself to lose weight before and actually ended up gaining weight!? So the part about your metabolism slowing when you starve yourself definitely rings true for me. I now eat whatever I want, when I want. This way, I find myself less likely to over indulge on something. With that said, I AM an EATER, but my body has learned to adjust (thankfully). Have a great Thursday!

    PS
The soda monster is now under control. Best thing I’ve ever cut out of my life!

Ohmygosh- Lequan! I’m so excited to hear it!!! Wow- that is a huge adjustment! Have you noticed a difference? Have you found alternatives to soda that you love.. or now that you go without it, do you not even miss it?

I too am a girl who LOVES dessert. There’s always room, right? Thank goodness I have a cheerleading outfit I need to fit in to, (and thanks to my wonderful gym and a toddler to chase around) so whenever I want something naughty, I think of my two piece or the extra workout I need to endure for that little bit of extra calories!

No alternatives! Just water. I don’t even think about it anymore, just reach for a glass and automatically fill it with water. I just don’t like diet pops so it’s the real thing or nothing at all for me. Weird that I don’t even have cravings anymore. And I know it’s under control cause I had a sip about a week ago and did not crave it anymore. It actually didn’t taste as good as it used to – weird!
