So, I kinda went agro at the new Doughboys Bakery on Beverly Blvd, only to end up with an average score of 2.5 cherries- Bummer!
Had the dessert above been called Banana Nut Cake w/ Whipped Cream, I would have given it 5-cherries. That’s exactly what it tasted like, but yet, we have our iconic carrot squiggle connoting Carrot cake. And I ordered Carrot Cake! SO confused. No cream cheese frosting in site.. and what’s with the banana flavor?
Now this Cherry, Pecan Cookie w/ White Chocolate Chips looked rich, dynamic, and decadent. Surely this would make me giddy! Er, wrong again. It was light and thin and oddly lacked any butter taste at all. The new girl who worked there confirmed that she didn’t think it had any butter. Oh, that’s interesting.. do they not want to advertise somewhere that it’s Vegan? low-fat? or something?? Again, perplexed.
Aw, now look at this Pumpkin Bar! Amazing- right?! Sorry- not quite.. it tasted nothing like pumpkin pie, for one thing. And even though it’s not supposed to be pie, it is supposed to be pumpkin, and that ingredient did not make its presence well known here. While the crust was rich, it had a cardboard aftertaste. That said, I kept eating this bar and think that if it had flecks of sea salt on top, we could be getting somewhere.
The Lemon Bar was the most on-target of all the desserts. It was super zingy with a hint of bitter and laid on a bed of thick & bland crust. I did appreciate the caramelized top, though, on both of the bars.
Doughboys has aesthetically promising desserts that ultimately let me down on all fronts.
ps: Their soups are delicious though!
