Chocolate Zuccotto Cake from Maggiano’s Little Italy

By Dessert Darling ·   April 29th, 2012

This weekend I ate enough desserts to sustain me for two weeks worth of posts! Yowza- it was a Serious sugar-showdown. Let’s start with this Chocolate Zuccotto Cake from Maggiano’s. If you’re wondering what the heck a Zuccotto is, it’s basically a chilled cake with alcohol (traditionally brandy), mousse or ice cream layers, and is made into the shape of Florence’s famous dome, the “duomo”.

I couldn’t wait to slice into this impressive mound of a dessert!

Just look at those heavenly layers- so much cake to consume!

This Zuccotto had a rich chocolate flavor deepened by the distinctly licorice liquor, Sambuca. I enjoyed the fun and playful consistencies of the cake and mousse, but the thick and slightly rubbery chocolate encapsulating the cake didn’t harmonize with the soft and bouncy layers inside. If you’re a chocolate fanatic though, you’ll surely love this dessert.

    Hey Jenny,

There’s a Maggiano’s near where Jason and Erin are getting married. Maybe we need to go there?

    Love,

Maggiano’s started out in Chicago as part of the Lettuce Entertain You group but now they have locations all over the country. Here is the link to their locator:

I hope you find one in your area! It would be a great wedding cake and most Maggiano’s even have small banquet rooms so you might consider them as a place for your pre-nup dinner or a shower.

This cake looks scrumptious. I just posted two chocolate desserts that I make – Chocolate Sorbet and Choclate Creams or Pots de Crème au Chocolat. I have only read a few of your posts, so I’m not sure if you bake desserts or only sample other people’s baking, but both of these recipes are fairly easy and delicious. And of course, they are full of divine chocolate.

Maggiano’s Chocolate Zuccotto Cake is totally IOM (instant orgasm material). It is the most amazing cake I have ever had, and I LOVE cake. This cake is the ultimate dessert, it has layers of fresh moist cake alternated with a dense, creamy, delectable chocolate mouse all covered with a dense fudge frosting. While the calorie counting crowd will wish that they never heard of it, I allow myself to indulge just once a year on my birthday. Fat and calories be damned, sometimes we must touch heaven, if only with our tongues. They give you a slab that is large enough to share even if you are a “selfish desserter”. This cake is so fabulous that no one should die without having tried it! Put it on your bucket list!

Where is the recipe? Am I just missing it? Just had this delicious, moist cake this weekend and I think it would be perfect for a groom’s cake I am making at the end of the month.
