Cupcakes at Famous Cupcakes

Even though the Kardashians promote Famous Cupcakes, I have to admit, they’re pretty good.

In addition to tasting delicious, these cupcakes are made with all natural and organic ingredients- always a bonus :)

The vanilla/vanilla was spiced with hints of cinnamon for a slightly exotic twist on a regular staple. The red-velvet was classic and while the peanut butter was eventually demolished, it did have a slight herbal tinge that tasted a bit off to me.

These are pretty tall cupcakes for my liking.  To improve upon them, I’d poke a hole through the center for extra icing (like Susie Cakes does it), or make them slightly smaller for a better icing-to-cake ratio.

Mini Cupcakes by Brown Sugar LA

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Monday, November 14th, 2011

I found these darling cupcakes by Brown Sugar LA on a Living Social deal and am so happy that I did! The pastry chef, Amy Brown, was top of her class at Le Cordon Bleu and she strives to use the best ingredients in her desserts (a key point for me!). These minis that I brought to Book Club were fresh, bouncy, gently flavored and just overall well rounded. The only thing I noticed was that not many girls got into the them, which highlighted a lack of umph. Perhaps a dash more salt.. or white sugar (?!) would make them a bit more crave-worthy.

Ps: Brown Sugar LA is a virtual bakery, which means they don’t have a store-front right now. Just fyi!

Oh how I love the holidays… the traditions, the colors, the festivities, and most importantly, the goodies! Halloween kicks off the holiday season and what better way to celebrate than to decorate festive cupcakes! Thank you Leslie Sarna, “the dainty vegetarian,” for teaching me these adorable and totally easy cupcake creations!

Wedding Dessert Table, Part 3: Swizzle Cakes

By Dessert Darling · Comments (2)
Monday, September 26th, 2011

Another strategic move for the dessert table was to serve manageable, bite-sized treats that people could delight in, even after an evening replete with appetizers, plated dinners, and alcohol. Tiny, “shot-glass” sized Swizzle Cakes were a no-brainer for me, as you may recall my glowing Golden Cherry review of them here. We had Lemon Drop Martinis, Cosmos, and White Russians for the big boys, and non-alcoholic Shirley Temples and Chocolate Cola for the kiddos.

Cupcakes at Mrs. Beasley’s

4 Cherries
The other night at Book Club my friend brought over a dozen Mrs. Beasley’s cupcakes. We all dug in, ooeying and aweing, and sampling every flavor.  I had two immediate thoughts upon first bite: 1- these were very moist and tasty cupcakes, and 2- the icing was way overly whipped.

Another point of contention was the vanilla frosting on the Red Velvet cupcake. A couple of the girls loved this cupcake anyway, but most of us missed the fresh cream cheese flavor that makes a red velvet cake special. The Chocolate Chocolate cupcake, however, was AMAZING. I’ve never had chocolate “frosting” quite like it. It was like a deep, rich, chocolate mousse whipped up onto a delicious, moist little cake.

Overall, these treats lurk somewhere between a 3.5-4 Cherry rating.  While these cupcakes would surely please your party guests, they’re almost $5 a pop!  At 1/5th the price you can get Hansen’s cupcakes on Fairfax. They taste a little more artificial, but they’re still delightful and will be much easier on the wallet!

Cupcakes and Cake at Sweet Lady Jane

1.5cherries

Don’t judge a cupcake by it’s cover. Boy did I learn this lesson from Sweet Lady Jane, the bakery made famous by stars like Jennifer Lopez and Bruce Springsteen for having their wedding cakes made by this chi chi cakery in WeHo and Santa Monica. Once you know one, you can spot a SLJ cupcake from 3 tables away. They’re the most darling creations you ever did see, a harmony of pastel colors blossoming into beautiful floral creations. They look like the perfect addition to any tea-party, young and old.

Just don’t bite into one.  I did so at a birthday dinner and wanted to spit it out immediately. The “frosting” was so dense it was like biting into a cold stick of butter, but even Butter has more flavor than the bland, sculpted brick topping these cakes. I’d been to SLJ a few years ago to order a friend’s cake.  I sampled everything and was extraordinarily disappointed by the lackluster cakes, steep prices, and rude service (It’s a cake shop! Where does “mean” factor into the equation? Should be the happiest place on earth to work!) The one cake that passed my palette was the Dulce De Leche. This was the only sample that had any flavor (like brown sugar) and some semblance of texture in the frosting (versus a smooth, hard stick of cold lard).

I know that some people enjoy the fact that SLJ cakes aren’t overly sweet. Well, if you don’t want something sweet, how ’bout not having dessert? There’s always butter in the fridge. Just a thought~

These cupcakes earn cherries just for looking like a cup full of fun! I mean, how can you not get a silly smile as you walk into a Crumbs Bake Shop and see the masterful mounds of candy decorated cakes posing on the display racks? So colorful! So decadent!  So chunky and fun!

But ummm, so large. Am I supposed to conquer this thing alone??  And mm, tastes a bit artificial, and %50 of the time they’re a bit too dry.  (sigh)

I want to love these cupcakes, but at the end of the day, they’re just not as special as they look. Crumbs cupcakes are fun to enjoy with a friend on a whim, but don’t expect to die and go to heaven.

This all said, I do endorse Crumb’s mini-cupcakes for special events.  Oddly enough, they’re far more delightful and delicious in their mini-sized versions :)

Extreme Cupcakes by NancyKay Confections

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

NancyKay’s Confections, a specialty bakery in Beverly Hills, was already famous for their gorgeous, fresh, and delicious wedding cakes. Now Nancy Kay’s made room for cupcakes and Watch Out World- these cupcakes mean serious business.

Made with all natural and fresh ingredients, Nancy Kay’s cupcakes are extremely flavorful and decadent. While the frosting is sweet and plentiful, the cake is light and airy. My favorite aspect of these treats is the double-feature filling of whipped cream and flavor in the center of each cake.

I mean, just look at that Dulce de Leche cupcake above! What you are observing, my friends, is a thick caramel ribbon, on top of sweet, cloudy frosting, blanketing a vanilla bean cupcake with a caramel and whipped-cream filled center.  Serious business.

And check out this Berries and Cream beauty above! No, these aren’t the cupcakes that your mama makes, but if they were, wouldn’t you just have your mom make you cupcakes? For something a little more exciting, check out NancyKay Confections to delight at your next festive event.~

Thank you Nancy Kay for sending me these delicious treats!

There’re so many things that I love about Sweet E’s Bake Shop, I hardly know where to begin!  Shall we bullet point this one? Yes:

-Adorable, mini cupcakes that are the Perfect size for a sweet indulgence

-fantastic use of glitter and shimmer in her frosting decor (love me my Glitter!)

-Delicious Cake Pops and Cake Lollipops- there is a difference

-fun chunky bits in the cake batter

-darling craftsmanship makes the treats perfect for entertaining and gifting

-the cutest novelty items in her shop

and finally

COOKIE DOUGH. FROSTING. Yep.. Cookie Dough Frosting… just think on that for a second.

Sweet E’s started as a Dessert Truck but has grown into a store front on Robertson as well. “Adorable” barely begins to describe this pink polkda dotted place. Seriously, Sweet E’s Bake Shop might just be my new Go-To place for buying treats for friends, meetings, Book Club, etc!

Babycakes Cupcakes- Vegan, Organic, Wheat-Gluten-and-Tasty Free

By Dessert Darling · Comments (5)
Thursday, June 16th, 2011

So I Finally, finally, finally had some Babycake cupcakes and all I can say is… Bleh!!! These treats are “refined-sugar-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, soy-free, casein-free, egg-free, vegan and Kosher” oh, and totally Yummy-free. I could maybe overlook the super dense nature of the cake, but the slippery slick, latex like consistency of the frosting repulsed me with every bite.  Both my bestie and I dumped these in the trash shortly after trying them. Oh, and not so sure that their refined-free sugars settled so well in my tummy. Err. Anyway, these cupcakes were made famous by Madonna, who we all know is freakish about what she puts into her body. Maybe for her frame of reference these are something special, but if you really need to avoid all those items in your desserts, might I direct you to Raw desserts? You can find some really tasty treats in the Raw world!

XOXO
