Dairy Free Gelato at Akasha Restaurant in Culver City

By Dessert Darling · March 2nd, 2012

I adore Akasha Restaurant in Culver City for serving delicious, sustainable, and organic food for carnivores and herbivores alike. Their desserts have always delighted me, so it was no surprise that I inhaled these scoops of Dairy Free Gelato that you see here. I had two scoops of the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip made with soy milk (YUM!) and one scoop of the Chocolate made with hemp (decent). This gelato was a little on the sweet side since it lacked dairy fat to temper the sugar. However, if you can handle sweet desserts, the Peanut Butter Chocolate chip was a delicious dairy-free alternative to real gelato.

Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Frozen Yogurt

By Dessert Darling · May 25th, 2011

I’m sure you’ve all had Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Frozen Yogurt before, so my apologies for not introducing anything earth shattering today. I’m in damage control mode from a string of all-you-can eat wedding festivities! I write about what I eat, and today, I ate Ben and Jerry’s Low-fat Chocolate Fudge Brownie fro-yo. It’s light in fat but rich in flavor and has the added bonus of fudgy brownie bites. For this “dieting” DD it’s doing the trick!

The Bigg Chill- Frozen Yogurt

By Dessert Darling · May 2nd, 2011

If you’ve ever cruised down Olympic Blvd, you’ve surely seen The Bigg Chill at the corner of Westwood, just across the street from a Penguin’s Frozen Yogurt.

For some reason though, this place always has a longer line, even with the teeniest, most difficult-to-navigate parking lot.  I had to investigate.

The Bigg Chill is an old-school joint where they serve you behind the counter. Hmm, we know I like my self-serve! I opted for Cake Batter, Peanut Butter, and Thin Mint Cookie.

The Cake Batter was so thick and fluffy, my mouth had to work to get through it. The Peanut Butter was a bit salty, and the Thin Mint Cookie was the biggest offender of all with its Scope Mouthwash flavoring. Clearly these Bigg Chill devotees haven’t experienced the likes of Yogurtland, where you can serve yourself from an amazing range of delicious flavors that all boast perfect consistencies!

Overall, an average score of 2.5 cherries for this corner yogurt joint.  Perhaps the fans just love the range of “diet-friendly” desserts they also sell?? Yech, that’s so ’90s and turn of the millenium to get fat-free, sugar-free desserts! But hey, to each his own.~

Studio Frozen Yogurt- An Old School Joint with Celebrity Sightings

By Dessert Darling · January 27th, 2011

3 Cherries

I once said that Frozen Yogurt falls into one of two categories: Good frozen yogurt and Bad frozen yogurt. Studio Frozen Yogurt in Studio City, though, remains an exception, falling somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. This old school yogurt joint came before the days of self-serve machines and fancy flavors like Red Velvet Cake and Tart Goji Berry Bonanza. They have limited flavors in a range of sweetener options like fructose, artificial sweetener, and actual sugar. The frozen yogurt itself is only OK and can make you feel a little ill to your tummy (depending on sweetener choice), but they serve you gargantuan sizes for your money, and even give you a whole cup full of goodies when you order toppings on the side. Finally, Studio Yogurt is known for some celeb encounters, and well- what’s not fun about that? Three cherries for average yogurt with great prices and decent extras.

Froyo Life, Great Premium Frozen Yogurt

By Dessert Darling · January 21st, 2011

5 Cherries
In Beverly Hills I stumbled upon a fabulous Frozen Yogurt chain called Froyo Life. With around 12 different flavors and over 25 different toppings available, this self-serve frozen yogurt place ranks up there with the likes of Menchies and Yogurt Stop. One thing that differentiated Froyo Life though, was that they offered more low-fat options than you normally see at yogurt joints. Since my fave flavors were low-fat (versus fat-free) the yogurt was more reminiscent of eating soft-served ice-cream: that slight amount of fat made for a noticeably richer experience. Also, I didn’t see healthy ingredients like live yogurt cultures and acidophilus advertised the way I do at other places, like my all-time fave, Yogurtland.  Overall, a delicious 5-cherry experience, but if I’m going to do Fro-Yo, I want my live, active yogurt cultures!

Perfect Gelato from TuttiMelon

By Dessert Darling · November 13th, 2010

5 Cherries
I don’t normally blog on a Saturday night, but I had the most heavenly trio of gelato and I really must share! I stumbled upon Tutti Melon in San Francisco and was stopped by the tempting gelato display before I could even make my way back to the frozen yogurt machines.  I ordered scoops of Creme Brulee, Butter Pecan, and Pumpkin.  Mmmm! Not only was each scoop divine on its own, but together the flavors blended to make sweet, sweet harmony.  In a word? Perfection.

Mechies Frozen Yogurt

By Dessert Darling · November 2nd, 2010

If you think about it, there’re really only two kinds of frozen yogurt: great frozen yogurt and bad frozen yogurt. Most of these places buy the same mixes, but the art is in the machines and how well the employees handle them.

Menchies falls under the category of Great frozen yogurt.  In Yiddish, a “mench” is “a person of integrity and honor,”  basically someone who does good deeds.  Well great deeds are done at Menchies with rotating selections of delicious frozen yogurt, a clean and cheery environment, and the widest selection of toppings that range from locally grown fruits to Nerds candy. Mmm, I’m craving the red velvet selection as I write!

Cereal Milk Frozen Yogurt at Momofuku Milk Bar in New York City

By Dessert Darling · October 24th, 2010

4.5 Cherries
Today I had the totally intriguing “Cereal Milk” frozen yogurt at the Momofuku milk bar in NYC.  The name alone disturbed me, and then the first taste struck me with its strong Corn Flake flavor.  Could this treat really be abuzz in NYC!? The woman in front of me was oohing-and-aweing, “isn’t it so great?!”

Ummmm, lick one, “not really,” lick two.. and then somewhere between lick three and five it hooked me. Yea, actually, it kind of is great.  Weird!… Gross?.. Yum! Cereal Milk follows the salty-sweet trend with its own distinct flavor to set it apart from the sea salt treats that abound these days. Additionally, I tried the Salty Pistachio Caramel soft-serve which tasted like gelato heaven.  Mmm, who knew?!

Stay tuned for my thoughts on Momofuku’s Cake Balls!

Yogurtland

Goldcherrie

If you’re anything like me, you went through a MASSIVE frozen yogurt phase (also known known as Fro-yo). In fact, one of my daily highlights in school was discovering what new flavors the cafeteria was serving.. Ha!

I’ve since discarded the soft stuff in exchange for real ice-cream.  However, there is one frozen yogurt joint that still makes my eyes sparkle.  This magical haven is Yogurtland, a fro-yo chain that not only has the most delicious frozen yogurt EVER, but also features 16 flavors at a time that you get to self-serve, as well as an incredible array of toppings that (wait for it.. ) you get to SELF SERVE!  (How much do we love self-serving? We love it.. a lot)

With fat and sugar-free options for yogurt and healthy fruit and nut toppings avail, you can make this stop as “healthy” or as naughty as you like (But! if you’re like me.. you walk out with 8 different flavors packed in a cup, standing at a foot tall. Heh heh,  what can I say, I’m the Dessert Darling!).

Yogurtland wins the coveted Golden Cherry for best frozen yogurt stop, hands down!
