FABES All Natural, Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie, Umm…….

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

While I think it’s important to have aesthetically pleasing desserts, I was still willing to give this pathetic looking pie a fighting chance. I’ve enjoyed FABE’S organic brownies in the past and I appreciate bakeries that cook with natural ingredients. But OHmyGod guys, this was THE most Disgusting dessert that my friends and I have ever had. Indeed, one friend suggested that it had gone bad, for surely FABES did not intend this selection to taste like regurgitated pumpkin pie (sorry to be graphic, but that’s the best way to describe it). Yes, that is a half cherry that you see at the top, as low as my rating system can go. If you are Gluten Free, I’m sorry, it’s just really hard to find you guys edible desserts! If not, go for the real thing guys! The option from the Whole Foods bakery (post here) was Amazing!

Pumpkin Pie from Whole Foods on Fairfax and 3rd

By Dessert Darling · Comments (4)
Sunday, November 6th, 2011

It’s Pie Time and I love nothing more than eating a delicious Pumpkin Pie and justifying the indulgence thanks to the squash’s high levels of fiber and Vitamin A.  My girlfriends and I recently tried this gorgeous pie from Whole Foods and swooned in unison. In addition to it’s rich, creamy texture, fresh and delicate balance of flavors, Whole Foods never uses artificial colors, sweeteners, preservatives, or trans fats in their baked goods. Yes Yes Yes! I swear guys, this is how you get to eat desserts and stay thin, eat real food!!! (more here)

That said, not all of Whole Foods desserts are created equal. More often than not, I am disappointed by their bakery selection. This Pumpkin Pie from the Fairfax location though, was simply perfection.

Stay tuned for my review on FABE’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie.~

Awe, Cutie Pie! Enjoy the Simplethings

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

West Hollywood’s 3rd Street continues to blossom with delicious new stores popping up and I’m loving its most recent addition, Simplethings Sandwich and Pie Shop. At Simplethings, they make the most darling, personal sized pies that they appropriately call “Cuties.”  At $2.50 a pop, these individual goodies could rival cupcakes at any holiday party.  I tried one small peach pie, and then mini chocolate, pumpkin, and banana cream pies. All were tasty and would satisfy any urge for pie year round.  The banana cream pie was my favorite. :)

ps: Their sandwiches are amazing and the decor of the shop is fresh and darling with its soft grey and pale yellow scheme.

Apple Pie and Banana Pie from Apple Pan… the Best in the City??

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Friday, October 14th, 2011

For ages I had heard legendary things about the Apple Pie at the Apple Pan in Westwood. I could never quite bring myself to stopping in at the janky diner, though. When I finally did take the plunge, I was pleasantly surprised by the clean simplicity of the wrap around bar and stools. There were no gross brown tables (as I’d imagined, for some reason) and um, no females. Yea, I’d clearly entered a man’s watering hole and felt like a fish out of water amongst the beefy guys and their burgers.

I told the server that I’d heard they made a great Apple Pie- “The Best in the City” he responded with a nonchalant air.  Hmm, we’ll see!  The Apple Pie came swimming in it’s juices with a thin, crumbly crust, and a generous scoop of ice cream.

I eagerly dug my fork in, took a bite, and…. that’s it? That’s the Best Apple Pie in the city??? Where’re the fireworks? Where’s the heavenly roll of my eyes? Where’s the need for me to lick my plate clean, appetite or not?  Don’t get me wrong, it was tasty, but not magic. The flavor had some spice, like Apple Cider, which was fine, but the biggest failing of this pie was it’s thin and uneventful crust.  It just didn’t even compare  to the GOLDEN CHERRY Apple Pie at Swingers Diner in West Hollywood (review here).

Unsatisfied, I thought I’d try the Banana Cream Pie per the suggestion of the gentleman next to me.

Awwwe, this was more like it! Layered with Banana custard, fresh banana slices, and whipped cream, this mild, sweet, and soothing pie was nothing short of a dream. Now this slice made me lick my plate clean.

Peach Cobbler at Swingers Diner

By Dessert Darling · Comments (3)
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Ok, I’m not going to lie, I had this Peach Cobbler a while ago at Swingers Diner. Though I can’t recall the specific details vividly enough to break it down, I can tell you that compared to their Apple Pie (see review here), this Peach Cobbler let me down. It was still a flavorful dessert, but not exciting enough to make me finish it. Overall, Swingers makes excellent desserts, but if you’re going for something fruity, get the Apple Pie. It won the Golden Cherry!!

Merry’s Miracle Tart- Raw, Vegan Chocolate & Chocolate Mint Desserts

By Dessert Darling · Comments (5)
Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

As we find ourselves fully emerged in bikini-season, I’m trying to eat “cleaner” foods.  This means that I’m delving into the Raw dessert section at Whole Foods more frequently to get my sugar fix. Raw desserts are free of all the “bad” stuff (gluten, refined sugars, wheat, dairy, etc. etc!) and even have nutritional benefits with their wholesome (though heavy) ingredients. I recently discovered Merry’s Miracle Tart by Hail Merry and I’m kind of obsessed. Cool, silky, smooth, rich, and flavorful- these decadent chocolate treats do the trick!

Fruit Cobbler with Cornbread Top at the Newsroom

By Dessert Darling · Comments (2)
Monday, June 20th, 2011

While The Newsroom Cafe on trendy Robertson has officially failed to blow my mind with any of their desserts, I quite enjoyed the Cornbread twist that topped their Fruit Cobbler.  The warm cobbler came in a large cup, topped with a generous serving of mediocre vanilla ice-cream.

I cut my spoon through the dish to discover a thick topping of Cornbread that added a hearty and granular texture to the mix of melty, sweet, fruit bites.

I found this slightly savory touch to be both intriguing and delightful, even if it wasn’t entirely harmonious.

Delicious Desserts at the Brentwood Farmer’s Market!!

By Dessert Darling · Comments (2)
Friday, June 10th, 2011

Happy Friday! Last weekend I had the most glorious Sunday with my girlfriends. We started the morning with yoga, then a trip to the Santa Monica stairs (which overlooks the Pacific ocean), and then went to the Farmer’s Market to eat all the calories we just burned! I wish I could do that every Sunday!

I found some amazing 5-cherry delights at the Brentwood Farmer’s Market, so I encourage you to go for me this Sunday since I can’t (I’ll be at my Wedding Shower!!! eeeg). :)

TEMPTATIONS CUPCAKES

While it’s a shame I never got an actual cupcake from Temptations Cupcakes, I did have a slice of this heavenly Berry Tort pictured above. It was way more exciting and delicious than it looked. I thought it would taste too “healthy” and boring for me. Au contraire! The tort was thick, whipped, sweet, creamy, dreamy and dynamic.  I swooned.  Click here for more info on Temptations Cupcakes!

PATISSERAW

These rich and fudgy Raw, Vegan, Organic Brownie Bites by Patisseraw got the 2-thumbs up stamp of approval from my super healthy friend Juls, of AwakeandLiving.com. For healthy decadence, these treats are the way to go. Click here for more info on Patisseraw!

LIVIA’S KITCHEN

The dessert that really knocked me silly was this sample of Vegan Brownies by Livia’s Kitchen. OhmyGAWWD, I haven’t enjoyed a Vegan dessert this much since the Vegan cupcake at Yummy Cupcakes! It’s very rare indeed, that a Vegan dessert earns an enthusiastic 5-cherries. This flavorful brownie had a deep chocolate taste with hints of salt, and almond meal substitute for flower (which gave it the added bonus of protein! ). Wow- even without butter, I loved this brownie. :) For more information on Livia’s Kitchen, click here.

All and all, a totally successful trip to the Farmer’s Market!

Crack Pie, Candy Bar Pie, and Cookie from Má Pêche in NY

By Dessert Darling
Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

You might recall the Cereal Milk Frozen Yogurt or the Cereal Cake Balls that I had by the Momofuku Group at Má Pêche. Intriguing and delicious. The same could be said for the most recent batch of goodies that I had during my last NYC trip. Take this Crack Pie, for instance…

Crack Pie is essentially an unadulterated marriage of my two favorite ingredients, Butter and Sugar. Indeed, it is more a glorified crust than an actual wedge of pie. Mild, sweet, and super rich- not for the faint of heart.

The Candy Bar Pie had much more flavor with its strong peanut butter presence. Furthermore, I preferred the various consistencies of this slice with its multilayers and textures. Sweet, salty, smooth, and crunchy all at once. Tone down the peanut butter and we have ourselves a dream pie.~

The Cornflake Chocolate Chip Marshmallow Cookie let us down. The marshmallow addition gave the cookie a stale and chewy quality that my guy and I could have done without.

Wow, that was a lot of sugar for one sampling! But what can I say, a DD’s gotta do what a DD’s gotta do. Overall, I’m delighted by Momofuku’s treats, but have yet to experience a home run.

Peach Cobbler at Barney’s Greengrass Restaurant in BH

By Dessert Darling · Comments (3)
Monday, May 16th, 2011

The other day I had lunch with a friend at Barney’s Greengrass in Beverly Hills. This sunny spot on top of the finest department store should surely have the finest food as well, right? Um, what’s this?                 Canned peaches in my Peach Cobbler?  Unacceptable~

A two cherry Pass~

XOXO
