Thinny Thursday: What does GLUTEN FREE Mean?

By Dessert Darling · Comments (0)
Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Gluten Free products are sprouting up everywhere and it’s no wonder why since there has been a 400% increase in Celiac’s Disease. Holy crap, say WHAT?! Ok, let’s back up.

What is GLUTEN?

Gluten is a substance in grains, especially wheat, that is responsible for the elastic texture of dough. It basically acts like.. a GLUE. So when you mix flour, water, and salt to make play-dough? Well that sticky-gummy like substance is what gluten also does in your insides when you consume it.

What is Celiac’s Disease?

Celiac’s is a digestive disease that wreaks havoc on the lining of the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients. People with Celiac’s Disease cannot tolerate Gluten (source).

Why the Increase in Gluten Allergies?

Turns out that yet again, GMOs are to blame (what are GMOs? See video here). In the case of wheat, it was genetically modified with the promise of feeding millions of starving people world wide. The result? There are now “30% more obese than undernourished in the world.”  (source)

Genetically Modified Wheat

The wheat in our food today is drastically different from the wheat our grandparents or even parents had growing up. According to Dr. Mark Hyman’s fascinating article here, some facts about the wheat of today:

  1. It contains a Super Starch – amylopectin A that is super fattening.
  2. It contains a form of Super Gluten that is super-inflammatory.
  3. It contains forms of a Super Drug that is super-addictive and makes you crave and eat more.

Crickies! What’s a DD to do?!

I know, you’re totally scratching your head right now, wondering WTF you can do and eat that’s still delicious and doesn’t tear up your intestines and make you sick and fat, right?! Or something like that. Fear not- you CAN take action.

  1. Eat Organic
  2. Eat Gluten Free- I shall be on the look out for fantastic GF dessert options! Stay tuned
  3. Eat Raw desserts (always Gluten Free)
  4. Sign this petition to ask the FDA to label foods with GMOs
Eat yummy, stay healthy!  Together, we’ll learn how. ;)

Thinny Thursday, the Skinny on Raw Desserts

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Someone on Twitter recently asked me what Raw Desserts are, so I’m taking this Thinny Thursday to explain. Raw Desserts are basically a God-send if you’re abstaining from refined foods, white sugar, flour, are Vegan, Gluten-free, and like sweets! According to About.com, a raw food diet consists of “raw, vegan foods that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit” so as to not lose their enzymes and nutritional value. These desserts are sweetened with natural and unrefined ingredients like dates, agave nectar, coconut and fruit. Additionally, they use crushed or pureed nuts to make the base of these treats. While Raw Desserts can be high in nut fat, every ingredient is usually a healthful item with minerals, vitamins, protein, and fiber. You can usually find Raw Desserts in a refrigerated area of a health food store like Whole Foods. Below is an image of one of my favorite Raw Chocolate Treats by Hail Merry (see review here).  Yum!

Thinny Thursday- America’s Poisoned Food & its Devastating Effects

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Hi all, I try not to be preachy in my La la land of Desserts, but this Ted Talks video was so captivating, jaw-dropping, and mind-boggling, that it completely changed the way that I view food in America. While I eat desserts every day, I still promote eating real food with all natural ingredients. For example, a cupcake with real butter, sugar, and flour is a thousand times better than a packaged dessert with an unending list of preservatives, chemicals, and artificial colors. If you wonder about Allergies, Obesity, Diabetes, Autism, and Cancer rates, then watch this video.

What can you do to protect yourself and family? Click here to sign a petition to have the FDA labels foods that have GMOs in them so that you are not shopping in the dark anymore. In the meantime, buy organic when you can or shop at stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods that refuse to carry products with GMOs in them.

Thinny Thursday- Yoga and Bethenny Frankel

By Dessert Darling · Comments (0)
Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Ladies and gents, Thinny Thursday  is Back!  So how did I keep sane during the pre-wedding crazies?

YOGA. Ugh, I know. Yoga.. You’re either on board or not at all. But I swear, it doesn’t have to be so Love-Hate. Well, Love is always good, but let’s work on the Hate. I’m personally an enthusiast who’s done Yoga Teacher Training at Yoga Works, one of the best institutions. That said, I’ve fallen off the wagon many times and even have my own gripes.. such as:

  • classes costs mula $
  • I actually have to get dressed and be seen (versus running out my door or the eliptical machine in the house)
  • classes last too long (1.5 hours)
I recently came across this article on Bethenny Frankel which shares that her secret to staying fit is also yoga. Furthermore, she’s come out with Bethenny’s Skinny Girl Workout which includes two 15-minute workouts and one 20-minute workout. Amazing!!! Whether you’re trying to ease yourself into Yoga or keep yourself in the game, an at-home DVD in managable time chunks is the perfect solution.
And look! She’s the real deal (versus some famous people who try to make yoga DVDs without knowing anything about it!). Ok, going to order this workout and try it myself. Will keep you posted!

Thinny Thursday- Grow Your Own Organic Garden!

By Dessert Darling · Comments (2)
Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Ok, I know that you do Not check in to DD to see vegetables of all things, BUT, you do ask me how I stay slim while eating desserts. Quite simply, I eat wholesome, organic, and natural foods when I’m not satisfying my sweet tooth. Even when I am eating desserts, they are freshly baked goods with real ingredients.  Indeed, I avoid packaged items with preservatives and chemicals like they’re the plague! (And who knows, they may very well be plaguing our society of all these unwanted allergies, autism, diabetes, etc. etc. etc!).

Look- Charlie totally approves.  So in light of eating well and getting married, my amazing friend and vegetarian blogger, Leslie Sarna, started me off by getting me some plants and seeds.

She actually did all the work planting them too while I just looked on and chatted away with her. Yay Leslie! THANK YOU so much for my garden!!! I am BEYOND excited to have fresh veggies at the tip of my fingers. It will be like Christmas everyday that a new tomato or carrot comes in!  Didn’t think a DD could get this excited over veggies, did you.

In addition to blogging yummy vegetarian dishes, Leslie also has some great dessert recipes, which you can check out here!

Morning Shake to Shake it up

By Dessert Darling · Comments (6)
Thursday, July 14th, 2011

I recently found myself feeling sluggish & light-headed and knew I had to make a change to re-boot my system. I discovered the book Spent by Frank Lipman, M.D. and I already feel so amazing! One thing that the author swears and lives by are morning “green” shakes. Quote: “I am so convinced  of a smoothie’s healing potential for those who are Spent that if changing your diet to eat a smoothie every morning were the only thing that you took away from this book and integrated into your life, I would be satisfied.”  How can I argue with the good Dr. over a smoothie? Step aside Oatmeal, I’ve got a new morning ritual.~

To buy the book Spent and see all his yummy smoothie recipes, click here.

Jillian Michaels Anti-Bloat Juice- I think it Works!

By Dessert Darling · Comments (9)
Thursday, June 30th, 2011

This Thinny Thursday I’m sharing Jillian Michael’s juice concoction for eliminating bloat. I kept seeing the recipe posted all over Pinterest and decided to see what the hoopla was about.  This mixture is a flavored water that you drink in addition to your regular, daily diet. It is not a fast, meal-substitute, or detox.

All you need is:

1 Dandelion Root Tea Bag

Sugar or Stevia to taste

1 Tbsp Cranberry Juice (100% sugar-free)

60 Ounces Distilled Water

2 Tbsp Lemon Juice

Mix and Voila, you have yourself a surprisingly delicious, lemonade like drink.~

It’s claimed that these combined ingredients make a fantastic and natural diuretic, that when consumed for seven-days straight, can make you drop five to ten pounds in water-weight. Wow! I am not a doctor and do not have a medical background. I’m just relaying what has seemed to work for other people online. Personally, I’m only day 3 days into drinking this mixture and I’ve gotta say, I Love it! I think it’s working… at the very least, I’m drinking lots of fluids!

Can Coconut Juice Combat Wrinkles?!

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Ok guys, this Thinny Thursday, we’re talking wrinkles. SOooo, I got really sick last month with Bronchitis and woke up one day with Super wrinkles. Say what?! Did I age 5 years overnight?!? I kinda freaked out (can you tell?) and through my investigative research, I discovered that antibiotics can dehydrated you. Well I took not one, but two courses of the Z-pack to fight my cough- Oh THANK GOD, so it was only temporary?? And not due to my love-affair with Sugar?! (please please say No!)

Needless to say, I was on a mission to HYDRATE! In comes Coconut Water. These days Coconut Water is touted as a panacea that’s capable of everything from raising your metabolism to fighting viruses like the flu. Hmmm, sounds a little too good to be true- but this much I’ve learned, it hydrates you and in way that your body can really absorb.

So, here I am drinking Coconut Water like it’s Nectar from the Gods and taking fish oil pills to boot. I think it’s helping!

My favorite brand is by far Amy and Brian’s Coconut Juice with pulp. Mmm, it’s my liquid dessert!

Has anyone else had an experience like this???

XOXO
