The BEST Caramels EVER by Le Bon Garcon

By Dessert Darling · Comments (2)
Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Le Bon Garcon makes The BEST caramels that I have Ever had, hands down. Truly, I am swooning here. And I didn’t even think that I liked caramels that much (blame Kraft)! Alas, Le Bon Garcon uses all natural ingredients that are slowly hand stirred, resulting in a silky smooth treat that quite literally melts in your mouth. Unlike traditional caramels, like Kraft squares or Milk Duds, there is no awkward, sticky, chewiness to these dainty delights. My charming little box came with four flavors: a citrus Valentine’s addition called Caramour,  Mango-Passion Fruit and my two dreamy favorites, Salted, and Macadamia Nut. I meant to have “a” bite and I ate nearly all of them. Yikes! If you want to treat a special someone to something other than chocolate this Valentine’s day, do check out Le Bon Garcon’s Golden Cherry Caramels!

The 2011 GOLDEN CHERRY AWARDS!

By Dessert Darling · Comments (5)
Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Another great year of sumptuous desserts has come to a conclusion. While these new-comers stood out as clear and worthy winners, some honorees from years past had no competition to knock them off their Golden Cherry standing (old winners not shown). Without further ado and a little drumroll please……….

BEST CAKE BALL:  95th Street Bakery

With high quality dark chocolate shells, creative flavors, and rich centers, 95th Street Bakery wins this year’s Golden Cherry for best cake ball! Unfortunately, these treats are only available in the S. California region and don’t have a Golden Cherry shelf-life (they drop to 4 cherries after refrigeration) so get them fresh!

BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE :  Baking Betty’s.

These dainty chocolate chip cookies with sweet mini marshmallows just beat out the much heartier Cookies By Joey for the Golden Cherry. When nearly every wedding guest raved about these cookies that we stuffed into our Welcome Bags, I knew they were a sure a crowd-pleaser and this year’s winner.

BEST MACARON:  ‘Lette Macarons

Formally known as Paulette Macarons, these colorful confections just beat out Mad Mac NY Macarons for two reasons: 1) greater variety with prettier design and 2) the Mad Mac pastry chef is a total snoot on Cupcake Wars. Lette’s haut couture macarons boast unique flavors like violet cassis and caramel, melt in your mouth, and got my husbands enthusiastic thumbs up (he never likes sweets). These naturally low-fat cookies make the perfect gift or personal indulgence for any time of year.

BEST BROWNIE SUNDAE:  The Farm of Beverly Hills

With a freshly baked and piping hot brownie under a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream, this decadent dessert is a party on a plate. I recommend celebrating this masterpiece with a friend!

BEST BREAD PUDDING:  Huckleberry

The heavenly Caramel Chocolate Bread Pudding at Huckleberry Cafe in Santa Monica is an ooey gooey bowl of buttery sin that I want to swim laps in. For those who prefer more dry and traditional bread puddings though, this custardy option isn’t for you (try the muffin version at the Larchmont Bungalow instead).

BEST BAKLAVA: Bakluvit

While I’m not normally a Baklava fan, Bakluvit makes sweet and flakey bars that revolutionized the treat for me. With original, chocolate, butterscotch, and seasonal flavors, these perfectly balanced Baklava squares make a surprisingly wonderful alternative to more traditional party treats.

BEST CHOCOLATE:  Christopher Elbow Chocolates

These gorgeous, chocolate gems melt in your mouth with outstanding textures, intriguing flavors, and the finest ingredients, making the steep price-tag of $2 a piece worth the indulgence.

BEST CAKE:  Cake and Art

While these cakes might not be as polished for weddings (like NancyKay’s Confections or Hansen’s) they are incredibly tasty, affordable, and can be made into any creation that you could possibly imagine. From a life-sized car made of cake to Rob Pattinson’s head, Cake and Art has done it all! Including my birthday cake last year. :)
Mmmmmm! I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store for me! Thank you so much for an incredible year!!!!
XOXO

Deluscious Cookies, Golden Cherry for the Chocolate Decadence!

I’d heard legendary things about Deluscious Cookies and now I know why: it’s thanks to a little mound called “Chocolate Decadence,” or the “Crack Cookie,” as my girlfriends nicknamed it tonight. A slightly crispy, powdered-sugar shell gives way to a soft center that’s fudgy-cakey-melted truffle-crumbly cookie all on in one! Truly, there isn’t a single word that can describe this thing other than “insane.”

In addition to the “Chocolate Decadence,” we enjoyed oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, and sugar cookies, which yielded varying responses. Some loved the sugar cookie while other’s preferred the oatmeal raisin. We all agreed that the chocolate chip cookie was a bit too similar to the ones we make at home, and well, when you pay over 3 bucks for a cookie, you want it to be pretty spectacular.

But why dwell on such details when we have a Golden Cherry in our mist?!  Congrats to Deluscious on your amazing chocolate creation!

Bakluvit Makes Baklava Amazing and Wins the GOLDEN CHERRY

I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT BAKLUVIT!

When Bakluvit reached out to me on Twitter to sample his Baklava, I might have actually winced. Bakluva? Really? I mean, if it’s there at an event, I’ll eat it, sure, but if I had my choice of desserts, it certainly wasn’t Baklava… Until now. WOW- I mean, Bakluvit practically revolutionized the treat for me. Traditionally, I find Baklava to be too sweet and earthy with it’s sacarrine, sticky honey and impenetrable hordes of messy flakes. By contrast, Bakluvit’s corn syrup and honey-free Baklava has a soothingly sweet and gentle flavor that melts in your mouth with buttery layers and a brownie-like cushioning.

Indeed, these bars were a huge hit with my agent’s office as we all swooned together trying them. What a unique and delicious office gift!  With three simple but amazing flavors like Chocolate (holla), Butterscotch (I die), and Original (perfection), you can’t go wrong with these unique and special bars.

Thank you Bakluvit for opening my eyes and delighting my tastebuds!!! You deserve this Golden Cherry all the way.~

My BRIDAL SHOWER and Swizzle Cakes!

By Dessert Darling · Comments (3)

DearLord, where do I even BEGIN!? My best friend just threw me the most glorious Bridal Shower and I couldn’t be more giddy, grateful, appreciative and blessed. The desserts were fantastic, so I’ll have to break the party down into a few posts.  Thank you Ali and Julie for hosting and many thanks to Leslie Sarna for taking all of the fabulous photos!!

If you take anything away from my bridal party dessert-wise, it is that Swizzle Cakes are the greatest creation since reality TV (I might like bad reality TV). Seriously, the White Russian mini, alcoholic touched “cupcakes” made every girl roll her eyes back and die. DIE. They had a brilliant buttery, brown sugar flavor with whipped but granular frosting, and the whole affair ended with a slight Kalua kick. I gave Swizzle Cakes 5-cherries in this post here , but I’m officially escalating their status to GOLDEN Cherry after my shower. Wow- MUST. HAVE. AT. WEDDING!

OHmyEFFINGGAWWWD!!!  Are you KIDDING me?! RUN, do not walk, FLY, if you must, to Huckleberry Cafe and Bakery in Santa Monica, CA, and get this Caramel, Chocolate Bread Pudding that’s made with Brioche, of all delicious breads! HOLYGAWD, I want to swim in a tub of this buttery, sweet, fluffly, custardy, caramel-chocolatey gooenyess and then die then and there.  Furthermore, I insist that an industrial sized casserole dish be filled with this bread pudding during my last days on earth and left by my side at all times. This is all I’ll need to eat….this and some pizza.  WOW. WOW WOW WOW. Huckleberry’s bread-pudding officially ranks up there as one of the best desserts that I have ever had. I salute you Huckleberry, for earning yourself the GOLDEN CHERRY for the BEST Bread Pudding! Hear, hear!

Platine Cookies: Roll Your Eyes Back and Die in Deliciousness

Golden Cherry

HOLY SUGAR COOKIE SANDWICH!  I about died, DIED, when I bit into the amazingness that is the vanilla, vanilla “Oreo” with buttercream frosting inside. I must award it the Golden Cherry now for best Sugar Cookie-Vanilla Buttercream sandwich, for I’m sure nothing in that category will compare. ;)

Imagine baking Pillsbury sugar cookies and then spreading on some Betty Crocker frosting: now imagine that combination tasting a hundred times better with real, natural, and fresh ingredients, and Voila- you’ve got yourself my favorite cookie from Platine Cookies in Culver City.

Platine Cookies makes small delights that look and taste like the best batch from a friend’s homemade recipe. Butter plays a prominent role in each baked good that Platine makes. It’s amazing how something as simple as real, great butter, and it’s ratio to salt, can dictate the wow-factor in a cookie. But it does!

Platine

Above is an image of my box of treats that I bought and devoured today.  My star cookie is in the far left, upper corner.  That Disco Ho Ho on the far right wasn’t kidding around either.

As I was buying my goodies, the couple next to me said that Mary Steenburgen had recommend the bakery to them.  So there you go- Platine’s Cookies is even celebrity approved! ;)

Golden Cherry
I can’t stop thinking about this cookie!!!! More like ”The Cookie,” as my friend and I referred to it all weekend long. I accidentally stumbled into a Marie Callender’s and discovered these rather large and intriguing chocolate chunk treats…

OOOhMyGAwwD, AMAZING.  Chewy and buttery in the center with sumptuous chocolate chunks, slightly firm and well cooked edges, the perfect balance of flavors, a mouthful of perfection, I can’t can’t even think straight! All weekend long my friend and I worked through our stack of cookies, gnawing on them for breakfast, during lunch, before dinner, and late night after our Saturday festivities.  ”The Cookie” is the quintessential Chocolate Chip Cookie experience and a Golden Cherry winner at that. Congratulations Marie Callender’s!

Golden Cherry
GLORY HALLELUJAH! I had not one, but two mind blowing cupcakes from Frosted Cupcakery today. My mind quite literally checked out the door as I momentarily floated to Heaven, bathed in a daze of delicious wonder.

I’ve always loved Frosted, as you may recall from this 5-cherry posting here.  But today’s experience with the Vanilla/Vanilla cupcake filled with Pumpkin Ice-cream and the Bacon Cheddar Corn Cake with Vanilla frosting, has officially escalated Frosted Cupcakery to Golden Cherry status.  This is not to take away from the 2009 Winner, Yummy Cupcakes, which is fabulous in its own right. It’s simply to say that this year, Frosted Cupcakery has come through for me time and time again with perfect cupcakes. They’re never dry, dense, bland, or overly sweet.  Instead, they’re light, bouncy, flavorful, and delicious. Indeed, Frosted Cupcakery makes the quintessential cupcakes.

and now for today’s insanely delicious and unique cupcake samples…the Vanilla with Pumpkin ice-cream filling…

Best Ice-Cream at Baskin-Robbins

By Dessert Darling · Comments (4)

Golden Cherry
Baskin-Robbins is more than just childhood in my mouth, it's the quintessential ice-cream. Many ice-cream brands have played serious roles in my life: Dreyer's in the home fridge, Buds after school (just down the street), Häagen-Dazs after the dentist (er, also just down the street, sorry doc.), and Ben & Jerry's in college (right by the factory). None of these other brands, however, encapsulate joy quite like walking into a Baskin Robbins, where scoops of ice-cream sport happy clown faces with cone hats and pink spoons and polka-dots abound.

2376738820_a4078bd7ae

With 31 traditional and idiosyncratic flavors, there's something for everyone and every memory. Dad's Pralines and Cream, Mom's Jamoca Almond Fudge, my brother's Mint Chip, and I was Rainbow Sherbet and Bubble Gum as a kid (when gum was strictly forbidden in my house), Gold Medal Ribbon in middle school, and Light Cappuccino Chip for life.

Pop41b30g0vzco

I don't extol the virtues of Baskin-Robbin's ice-cream simply for nostalgia's sake.  In addition to the colorful joy of this all-American brand, the ice-cream is downright delicious. BR ice-cream boasts the perfect consistency (not too packed like Häagen-Dazs, not too fluffy like Breyers), the perfect chunkyness (not intrusive like Ben & Jerry's hunks, not minimal like Dreyer's) and finally, the perfect flavor (not too mild, not too intense).

Honestly, eating this tasty ice-cream and reading their history here, well… it's enough to make me proud to be an American.~
