Mint Chocolate Milkshake from Cafe Gratitude

By Dessert Darling · Comments (1)
Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

What does a Dessert Darling eat the day before her wedding? Why, a healthy milkshake, of course! Thankfully there was a Cafe Gratitude in the adorable town of Healdsburg where I could take all of my bridesmaids for a special, pre-wedding lunch. While the girls ordered fabulous, savory dishes, I happily settled for this Chocolate Mint Milkshake that I could justify thanks to the Vitamineral Green that they sneak in there. The shake was incredibly yummy and I think I’ve officially become obsessed with Cafe Gratitude!

SCOOPS Gelato, Perfect for this HEAT!

5 Cherries
The Heat is ON!  No complaints here! This just means I get to eat more of my favorite dessert… gelato!

The other day I finally checked out SCOOPS, a charming little gelateria that serves both traditional gelato as well as vegan, gluten and lactose-free options made with soy milk. This gelato holds true to the Italian tradition of using milk instead of cream, which results in a markedly lighter fair. This fresh rendition is incredibly desirable during a heat-wave (and a diet, for those counting cals)!

In addition to great consistency, Scoops boasts unique and original flavors like Mascarpone Butterfinger, Honey Lavendar, Red Velvet Cake (with cake and icing in it!) and their best selling “Brown Bread,” which is an incredible combo of brown sugar with crunchy Grapenuts! Mmm. Five cherries all the way!~

Fōnuts, So Good You Could Go Nuts?

By Dessert Darling · Comments (5)
Friday, September 2nd, 2011

I was really excited to see a new little bakery open up on 3rd Street where “Kiss My Bundt” used to be.  This wasn’t just any bakery, however, it was a Faux-Doughnut and coffee shop.

Faux-Doughnuts, you wonder?! Yea, everyone else in line was scratching their head over that one too. So these donuts are baked, not fried… doesn’t that just make them ring shaped cakes? Anything else “healthier” about them? Oh, ok, some are gluten-free (almond meal), some are vegan, and some don’t use white-sugar (errr, but they use brown sugar, which, pardonne-moi, is the same idea).  Ok, so I tried a Gluten Free Chocolate Hazelnut and a Gluten Free, Vegan Lemon fōnut.

The chocolate selection was a complete waste-of-space that reminded me of Snackwells Devil Food Cake cookies. Bummer. The Lemon fōnut though, was far tastier… and heavier.  This super dense dessert surely had even more calories than a real donut! Hmm, sorry guys, I’m not sure I’m really on board here!

If you need Vegan or Gluten Free desserts, or a sense of adventure, then by all means, check out Fōnuts. The two fōnuts that I had were so wildly different in desirability, that who knows, maybe there’s an amazing option there that I never even tried. At the end of the day though, if you really want a donut? Why go faux?

Raw, Organic Chocolate Pudding by Stinkey Monkey. Incredible~

By Dessert Darling · Comments (4)

I found this little cup of raw, Chocolate Pudding by Stinkey Monkey and am positively giddy about how delicious such simple and wholesome ingredients can be!

This organic, diary free, glutten free, soy free, and low-glycemic treat is made with coconut meat & milk, matcha powder, vanilla bean, cacao powder, palm sugar, and himalayan salt. The cool, whipped consistency reminded me of a rich and delicious mousse.

While palm sugar isn’t quite as low as Agave nectar on the glycemic index, it is incredibly tasty and makes natural desserts taste just as sinful as “real” ones.

Best Meyer Lemon Dessert Ever: Merry’s Miracle Tart, Vegan & Raw

By Dessert Darling · Comments (3)
Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Ok, I just took this dessert dooown. I mean, it didn’t have a Chance. I even went so far as to lick the paper cup that it came in! Woa, woa, ok, let’s rewind. Remember this review that I wrote for the Chocolate Merry’s Miracle Tart (click here)? Really, I thought that was as good as it gets. I’d always seen the lemon one next to the chocolate one in the raw dessert section at Whole Foods, but it just looked so Boring and….I’m not really a lemon girl.

But then I got a comment that I had to try the lemon one too. I’m so glad that I got that comment! Otherwise, I’d still pass over this unassuming treat. Wow- It was Perfection. The tart was totally flavorful while not being too zingy and lemony. Even the crust rocked my world!

And Wow! I just discovered a new, miracle sweetener! I saw “Palm Sugar” in the ingredients and was like– What?! That’s not RAW! Or is it?? So I looked up Palm Sugar, and check it out (here), it’s low on the glycemic index and even has nutritional benefits like potassium, zinc, iron, and B-vitamins. WapbabalooBop- How’s THAT for a Thinny Thursday delight!?  Please keep the comments coming! They make me smile so :)

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

You may recall last Thinny Thursday’s post in which I spoke about Dr. Lipman’s book Spent and his firm belief in the healing power of smoothies (see here).  I can’t disagree with the man, they are delicious. Today I’m sharing with you his recipe for the Banana Berry Smoothie.  Btw, might start calling these Shakey Thursday’s instead if I keep this up! ;-)

Banana Berry Smoothie

  • 1 cup mixed, frozen berries
  • 1 serving or 3-4 tablespoons vanilla or plain whey protein powder
  • 1 serving or 2 teaspoons green powder

Goji Cherry Truffles by UliMana, Organic and Raw

By Dessert Darling · Comments (4)
Monday, July 25th, 2011

Hi guys! Sorry, I took a little breaky-poo from posts last week. Anyway, I continue to gravitate towards healthier treats as it’s summer-time-bikini-time and I’m getting ready to tie the knot this September. ThankGawd for Raw desserts! Seriously, they are flavorful and rich while actually yielding some nutritional benefits with their wholesome ingredients.

Take these Goji Cherry Truffles by UliMana..

These fudgy truffles have an intense cocoa flavor that soothes a spritely zest from the cherries and goji berries.  The silky smooth inside contrasts with a crunchy textured exterior for an all around pleasurable experience.

These delicious treats earn 5-cherries for being excellent alternatives to “real” chocolate truffles with sugar and bad butters.  I found these UliMana chocolates at Erewhon Natural Foods Market.

Morning Shake to Shake it up: Blueberry Avocado Smoothie

By Dessert Darling · Comments (6)
Thursday, July 14th, 2011

I recently found myself feeling sluggish & light-headed and knew I had to make a change to re-boot my system. I discovered the book Spent by Frank Lipman, M.D. and I already feel so amazing! One thing that the author swears and lives by are morning “green” shakes. Quote: “I am so convinced  of a smoothie’s healing potential for those who are Spent that if changing your diet to eat a smoothie every morning were the only thing that you took away from this book and integrated into your life, I would be satisfied.”  How can I argue with the good Dr. over a smoothie? Step aside Oatmeal, I’ve got a new morning ritual.~

To buy the book Spent and see all his yummy smoothie recipes, click here.

Blueberry Avocado Smoothie

  • 1 cup frozen organic blueberries
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • juice of half a lime
  • 1 tablespoon agave syrup
  • 1 serving or 3-4 tablespoons vanilla or plain whey protein powder
  • 1 serving or 2 teaspoons greens powder
  • 4 ice cubes

Merry’s Miracle Tart- Raw, Vegan Chocolate & Chocolate Mint Desserts

By Dessert Darling · Comments (5)
Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

As we find ourselves fully emerged in bikini-season, I’m trying to eat “cleaner” foods.  This means that I’m delving into the Raw dessert section at Whole Foods more frequently to get my sugar fix. Raw desserts are free of all the “bad” stuff (gluten, refined sugars, wheat, dairy, etc. etc!) and even have nutritional benefits with their wholesome (though heavy) ingredients. I recently discovered Merry’s Miracle Tart by Hail Merry and I’m kind of obsessed. Cool, silky, smooth, rich, and flavorful- these decadent chocolate treats do the trick!

For more information on Hail Merry and their other Raw, Vegan desserts, click here.
